Do I need to know how to play an instrument or sing?

No, you do not need to know how to play an instrument or sing. Although knowing one or the other will certainly give you an advantage, they are not necessities in order to use the Lab. Many of our members come with no background in music. All it takes is a strong desire to learn the equipment we have. The Music Lab is a great compliment for someone currently taking lessons and in need of a place to practice.

How much does it cost?

A year membership at the Music Lab costs only $125.00! That covers a membership for an entire year. That also covers both of our facilities. Compare that to the $30 to $75 dollars per hour that many big studios charge and you can see what a bargain the Music Lab really is.

How can it be so affordable?

Our membership costs remain so low because of the numerous supporters of the Lab. Through generous grants and private donations from our great community, kids are given the opportunity to explore what music has to offer here at The Lab.

Can I use my own blank cassettes, CD-Rs and MDs?

Sure! The Downtown Music Lab keeps these items stocked in house for your convenience. We have blank CD's available with a jewel case for $1.00 each. If you would prefer to use your own media, feel free to do so. We can not guarantee that your media will work with our equipment, nor will we allow you to use media that is already known to be incompatible. If you choose to use your own media, we do ask that you aprove it with staff first to help ensure the quality of your project.

Who owns the music?

YMIYOI. That means, You Made It, You Own It. This applies to the individual songs that you work on here at the lab. Ownership is split among those members that may have worked on a project together. We'll even show you how to fill out the copyright forms! While the Music lab does own all rights to the CDs that we produce, the songs on it as created by our members, belong to them.
